When we think about children's physical development, core strength is frequently overlooked. The core muscles, which include those around the abdomen, back, and pelvis, are crucial for promoting good balance and coordination because they connect the upper and lower parts of the body.  Core muscles are also important for improved posture and stability, enhanced coordination and motor skills, and breathing and digestion.

Below are a few of our favorite exercises that help promote core strength in kids:

  • Planks: Planks are excellent for strengthening the entire core.  When you're in plank position, the core muscles are engaged and providing stability because your spine is in a neutral position.

  • Bridges: Have the child lie on their back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. They should lift their hips towards the ceiling, creating a straight line from their shoulders to their knees.  Bridges are especially great for promoting stability and balance skills.

  • Animal Walks: Encourage the child to walk like different animals, such as a bear crawl (on hands and feet) or crab walk (on hands and feet with the belly facing up). These movements are great for core engagement because they engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously and require coordination and balance.

  • Seated Balance Exercises: Sit the child on an therapy ball or a balance seating cushion to promote core muscle strengthening through frequent side-to-side movements.  Encourage them to maintain their balance while performing simple tasks, such as catching a bean bag or using a Velcro Catch Set

  • Yoga Poses: Simple yoga poses can strengthen the core while also promoting relaxation and flexibility.  A few of our favorite core-strengthening yoga poses include the boat pose, dolphin pose, and chair pose. • Wheelbarrow Walks: With a partner holding their legs, the child walks on their hands like a wheelbarrow. This exercise is especially great for upper body stability and postural control.
